VENICE

Gelateria Alaska - Santa Croce
Calle Larga dei Bari, 1159 Santa Croce
30135 Venice

Go to Campo Di S. Giacomo Dell Orio, which is worth seeing as one of the loveliest Campos in Venice, go along to Campo Nazario Sauro and hang a right on LAage Dei Bari.

Fondamenta de la Misericordia, a street with a handful of quality restaurants and bars – my favourite was Jimon, a cracking wine bar serving locals and visitors, snug and serving a very decent menu of wine from €2 a glass. Buzzing between 5.30 -7p.m. Quiet between 7-8.30pm and great again after that.

Housed in an elegant fifteenth century Venetian palazzo, the Hotel Ai Mori d'Oriente is located between the Grand Canal and the ferry stop near the Madonna dell'Orto church, illustrious example of Venetian Gothic architecture. The ferry dock for the Murano, Burano and Torcello islands is just a stone's throw away.

Pizza, Sarde in Saor, Bigoi in Salsa, pasta made in house
This may be the happiest family to run a restaurant in Venice. Get a table outside on Rio Cannaregio for an unobstructed view of the Venetian lagoon. The eggplant pizza is one of my favorites, as is the sardines in sweet and sour sauce. It’s a great place if part of your group is adventurous, while others need to stick with something recognizable.

Il Refolo in Campo San Giacomo Dall'Orio
Il Refolo
Santa Croce 1459 (Campo San Giacomo Dall’Orio)
Pizza, roast chicken
Open during warmer months of the year

Closed all day Monday, and Tuesday Lunch
This is the restaurant owned by the family which runs “Da Fiore”, the most prized restaurant in Venice. It’s a simpler restaurant “for the rest of us”; no special dress code, pizza is as popular here as the chicken and roast potatoes. It’s a great setting in the non-touristy Campo San Giacomo Dal’Orio along a quiet canal.
